Hosting Family

Hosting-families are an invaluable part of our breeding program.
On this page, you can read about how we work together with families who lovingly care for our dogs, and what both we and you can expect from a hosting family agreement.

What is a Hosting-family?

A hosting arrangement means that one of our puppies moves in with a family while still remaining part of our breeding program.
Kennel CardiStar retains ownership of the puppy, but the family has the dog fully as their own and is responsible for daily care, food, insurance, veterinary expenses, equipment and training. The hosting family does not pay a purchase price for the dog.

The family becomes part of our breeding program and enjoys having the dog, without carrying the formal responsibilities that come with breeding. We retain the breeding rights to the dog and it may be used in our breeding program and borrowed for shows when needed. This allows us to follow the dog’s development closely and ensure that its potential as a breeding dog is used in the best possible way.

Hosting arrangements are an invaluable part of our breeding program. They make it possible to include more dogs in breeding while ensuring genetic diversity - something that would otherwise be difficult to achieve when we can only keep a limited number of dogs in our own home.

Hosting a female

When a female is placed in a hosting family, she will live in your home, where you care for her as if she were your own.
You are responsible for all everyday expenses, including veterinary care, insurance, equipment and training.

From time to time, we will borrow the female for shows and show-related training. All expenses related to shows, as well as all costs connected to breeding and raising litters, are covered by us.

The female will be borrowed when she is to be bred. During pregnancy, she will continue to live with you until approximately 14 days before the expected due date. The puppies are born here with us and the female will stay with us during the 8 weeks that the puppies remain here. You are, of course, very welcome to visit her and the puppies during this period.

Once the puppies move to their new homes, the female will return to you. After the female has had a maximum of two litters, full ownership is transferred to you.

Hosting a male

When a male dog is placed with a hosting family, he will live in your home and be cared for as a full member of your family.
You are responsible for all everyday expenses, including veterinary care, insurance, equipment, and training.

From time to time, we may borrow the male dog for breeding, as well as for training or dog shows. All expenses related to breeding, mating, and showing are covered by us.

After the male dog has participated in the agreed number of litters, or when we determine that he should be retired from breeding, full ownership will be transferred to you.

What do our hosting families say?

Tootsie’s mom

“I have been so fortunate to have a wonderful bitch from Stephanie in a hosting arrangement. Stephanie is kind and caring and I have been allowed to be part of the entire journey  - from when Tootsie was inseminated, through veterinary visits, to visiting Tootsie and her 10 puppies at Stephanie’s place. I have had the great pleasure of following the puppies and the skilled and loving work that Stephanie puts into each and every puppy. You can truly feel it in the dogs - they are all gentle, loving and fun in their own way. Thank you, Stephanie - I am happy that you and the dogs have become part of my life.”

Aston’s family

“Being a host-family for a male dog for CardiStar’s is fantastic. We have a really good collaboration with Stephanie regarding Aston when he is needed for both breeding and shows. In everyday life, he is part of our family and is treated as our very own dog. As this is our first time owning a dog, it is a great reassurance for us to be able to receive advice and guidance from Stephanie. It is the absolutely perfect solution for us.”
